homeopathic remedies for dogs
Caroline J asked:

I’ve got a dog who has very bad allergies. Don’t worry she has been to the vet and continues to have regular visits, she is on medication and I have a special shampoo I’ve been washing her with. She has had the allergies for three years and her prior owner’s vet used steroids several times to clear them up, right now she isn’t on them and I think my vets waiting to see how these current meds and shampoo work. They are doing okay but the problem is every time she is alone she itches like crazy and licks her paws so she basically undoes any healing that has occurred. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with homeopathic or natural remedies for itching and had good results. She is on fish oil and omega 3 supplements and is also 10mg of claritin, she doesn’t seem uncomfortable when she is with us, the obsessive itching and licking only happens when she is by herself. I was looking at products by PetAlive but I’m afraid to waste my money, need some more personal experiences.
We know she has food allergies, she is currently on Natural Balance allergy formula Fish and Sweet Potato, no chicken or beef or fillers for that matter.

In my experience they either do not work, or they don’t work effectively. I’d be hesitant to spend any money on treatments that are not proven effective.

You should try putting her on a fish only diet & see if that helps. My dog had horrible skin allergies & was diagnosed 2x as ’seasonal allergies’ & put on Benedryl, special shampoos, the works. ONe day I put her on Orijen 6 fish no grain & she cleared up in 10days, Like a different dog altogether. She was previously on Orijen grain free so I was told it wasn’t food allergies becasue they are 99% of the time grain. Turns out she was allergic to CHICKEN.

You say that your dog lick and possibly chew herself when you are not around. I think you should follow the doctor’s order. If it’s been at least 6 months and it is not working. Look into talking to a behaviorist. It can be OCD for dog. When dog get separation anxiety, they can lick or chew their skin/fur. My dog does the licking thing when she is stress. You can try getting a Comfort Zone plug in to put near her cage to help with separation anxiety. (get this online for about $35 last for a month which is cheaper than a behavior consult if that solves the problem…but for bad case of separation anxiety it will most likely need a professional.)
Back to the itch, get brewers yeast tablets and add that to the fish oil and omega 3 supplement, it is suppose to help with itching. (it helps make my dogs’ coat shiny and healthy.)
Oh yeah like MelMac4 say, food allergies can be a possibility, my friend’s dog is allergic to beef.

Has your vet considered a food allergy? Are you using Malaseb shampoo or something else. Salmon oil can’t hurt. Our dog isn’t licking and scratching like he used to since we changed food.
