Bill asked: You may have heard the recent news that Zicam has been linked to permanent loss of smell because of zinc in the spray or nasal swab. The news reports also reveal that this “medicine” is based on homeopathic nonsense. I looked at a container of Zicam, and I didn’t see the words “homeopathic” or “zinc” anywhere on the bottle or box.
Does anyone know what other popular over-the-counter products are based on bogus homeopathy?

nick kave asked: I woke up this morning feeling nauseous, puked, feverish, and like I was starting to get the flu….and then I took some homeopathic things, zinc, vitamins, vitamin C< lots of fluids had a good meal, and now about 6/7 hours later...I feel almost "fine."
Can we really do things at the FIRST signs of illness at the very beginning, to shorten the duration or avoid it altogether?
OR basically we'll still get sick, but it won't be nearly as bad?
Or is that all a myth?
Any other suggestions? I know I'm battling something really bad,.....and whatever I'm doing so far IS working, but I'd just like to know what else I could be doing....?
I'm also drinking tons of liquids and resting.
I don't have an appetite whatsoever though and I'm "tired".

mdGreg C asked: - loss of smell, known as anosmia. “, What is the Mechanism?
http://www.zicam.com/products/coldremedy_nasalgel
The Effectiveness of Zinc Preparations for Common Cold has Been Long In Question, Not Just Zicam:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Zinc_gluconate#Zicam:_Homeopathic.3F
I’m Not a Fan of Zicam, but Looks, Offhand, as “Damning By the Word”. If an “Expert” is Unable to Back Up their Words, then it Might as Well Be Magic. This is Commonplace. Many Times I’ve Heard Words By “Experts” Stated as Unequivocal, Which I Knew Couldn’t Possibly Be True.
Sorry lotusflower007, but What is the Mechanism of Anosmia?
Thanks gangadharan_nair, but These don’t Address the Question.
Thanks Very Much Peter.

Richard S asked: Zicam is touted as a “homeopathic” remedy. The zinc in it is so diluted that it is hard to see how it can be of any benefit or harm. The very theory of homeopathy predates the knowledge that micro-organisms make us sick, rather it is based on a theory of “miasma” (evil spirits).
Yet Zicam has its products in large drugstore chains. Do they have blackmail information on corporate management? Do they pay off somebody with money, sex, or drugs? How does it happen?
Faith is the acceptance of the truth of something without evidence. Why don’t I have faith?

susieque asked:
My brother has had serious dandruff most of his adult life. Not a lot of hair loss, just giant dry scalp–large flakes. Is there some connection between, let’s guess, the intake of zinc, or one of the alphabetical vitamins (A,B,C,D…etc) and dry scalp?
I’d love to help him, yet most of the homeopathic remedies or relievers call for 9 items 3 of which one does not even know what it is or where to get it. We are in the USA, so don’t have access to the items in Great Britian. Thanks for any thought you can put into this challenge–he’s about 61. Goofy answers may be clever, but thanks, no, he is not into shaving his head! Sorry!

Aristo asked: A counter-question to Dave question.
(OMNS, January 19, 2010) There was not even one death caused by a dietary supplement in 2008, according to the most recent information collected by the U.S. National Poison Data System. The new 174-page annual report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers, published in the journal Clinical Toxicology, shows zero deaths from multiple vitamins; zero deaths from any of the B vitamins; zero deaths from vitamins A, C, D, or E; and zero deaths from any other vitamin.
Additionally, there were no deaths whatsoever from any amino acid or herbal product. This means no deaths at all from blue cohosh, echinacea, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, kava kava, St. John’s wort, valerian, yohimbe, Asian medicines, ayurvedic medicines, or any other botanical. There were zero deaths from creatine, blue-green algae, glucosamine, chondroitin, melatonin, or any homeopathic remedies.
Furthermore, there were zero deaths in 2008 from any dietary mineral supplement. This means there were no fatalities from calcium, magnesium, chromium, zinc, colloidal silver, selenium, iron, or multi-mineral supplements. Two children died as a result of medical use of the antacid sodium bicarbonate. The other “Electrolyte and Mineral” category death was due to a man accidentally drinking sodium hydroxide, a highly toxic degreaser and drain-opener.
No man, woman or child died from nutritional supplements. Period.
