The Effectiveness of Zinc Preparations for Common Cold has Been Long In Question, Not Just Zicam:

I’m Not a Fan of Zicam, but Looks, Offhand, as “Damning By the Word”. If an “Expert” is Unable to Back Up their Words, then it Might as Well Be Magic. This is Commonplace. Many Times I’ve Heard Words By “Experts” Stated as Unequivocal, Which I Knew Couldn’t Possibly Be True.
Sorry lotusflower007, but What is the Mechanism of Anosmia?
Thanks gangadharan_nair, but These don’t Address the Question.
Thanks Very Much Peter.

I’m not sure what your question is…
Please see the web page for more details on Anosmia. There are several controversies in the medical field.
It appears that claims of these products causing anosmia are unfounded. In the 1930’s a different zinc salt, zinc sulphate, was in use, which reacts with water to give sulphuric acid and zinc oxide. It is easy to see how this could cause lasting damage when applied to the epithelium of the nose. By contrast, Zicam contains zinc gluconate, which dissociates to a much weaker acid.
